“Cartas al pie de un árbol” ( Letters At The Foot Of A Tree) is the story of undocumented immigrants and their determination to cross the border into the United States in pursuit of a better life for their families. It is a story of clashes between North and South, haves and have-nots, memory and oblivion, those who seek and those who find, the living and the dead, reality and dreams, parents and children, peace and violence, hope and despair. In the midst of such convergences and divergences, a deaf mother looks for her son, who went off to the United States in search for opportunity. The same son, who has lost his memory, seeks to recover it so as to be able to return to his hometown, his origins, and the childhood that sealed his fate. Written in the U.S. – Mexico border, the play is a poetic, devastating darkly humorous rendering of what is a daily occurrence in the region and many parts of the world: The death of someone who attempts to cross a border and achieve a better life. “Cartas al pie de un Arbol” has played with great success at festivals around the world, including the Don Quixote festival in Paris, France, the Latin American Festival in Manizales, Colombia, and the National Theater showcase in Mexico city, where it received rave reviews and earned the 2001 Best Play Award presented by the Mexican Association of Theater Critics.
