South Coast Repertory was founded in 1964 by David Emmes and Martin Benson, former theatre students at San Francisco State. The theatre has undergone four different renovations and/or relocations. In September 1978, a gift of land on which the current theatre was built was made by the Segerstrom family. In October 5, 2002, the Folino Theater Center was inaugurated, including the new Julianne Argyros Stage, formerly the Second Stage. This theatre was designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli and inspired by theatres on Broadway and in London's West End. The theatre has a mezzanine, balcony and box seats.
