Annual awards given to New York City theater artists and groups involved in Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions. They were initiated in 1956 by Edwin (Ed) Fancher, publisher of The Village Voice. They were first awarded under the direction of theater critic Jerry Tallmer, for Off-Broadway productions. Off-Off-Broadway productions became eligible in 1964.
